It is with regret that I open this month’s issue with the subject of Alexander McQueen’s untimely death. Many journalists have reflected on his contribution to the fashion world but few have mentioned his radical vision of hair and beauty. Employing some of the best session stars our industry has to offer his models were transformed into awe-inspiring characters for every one of his legendary catwalk shows.
For spring/ summer ‘10 (shown last September) the theme was the reverse evolution of man, which saw the girls morph from humans into beautiful alien-like amphibians. Projecting McQueen’s vision, hairdresser Guido Palau, make-up artist Peter Philips and nail tech Marian Newman worked with their teams to style extreme but breathtaking beauty that was truly out of this world. It was never meant for everyday wear, but rather as artistic expression, a way of pushing boundaries and showing the world the phenomenal talents of the team that worked around him.
A true visionary, his boldness spanned much further than fashion alone and his creativity will be sorely missed.
